How to install Heyimokay on Android, step by step
Heyimokay is installed from heyimokay.com rather than Google Play. On the Android phone of the person who will check in, open heyimokay.com, tap Download for Android, open the downloaded file, allow your browser to install apps when Android asks, then tap Install. It takes a few minutes.
Before you start
- Use the Android phone of the person who will check in. People in their circle don’t need to install anything to receive alerts, because alerts arrive by text message and email.
- Make sure the phone is connected to wifi or mobile data.
- Have the names, mobile numbers and email addresses of up to six people ready for the circle.
1. Download the app
On the Android phone, open Chrome (or another browser) and go to heyimokay.com. Tap Download for Android. You can also type heyimokay.com/download, which starts the download straight away.
The browser may warn that this type of file can harm your device. It shows that message for every app downloaded outside an app store. If you’re on heyimokay.com, choose the option to download the file anyway.
2. Open the downloaded file
When the download finishes, tap Open in the message at the bottom of the screen. If you missed it, open the Files or Downloads app and tap heyimokay.apk.
3. Allow your browser to install apps
The first time you install an app this way, Android asks for permission. You’ll see a message that your phone isn’t allowed to install unknown apps from this source. Tap Settings, switch on Allow from this source (on some phones it’s called Install unknown apps), then go back.
The exact words vary between Samsung, Google Pixel, Xiaomi and other phones, but the steps are the same.
4. Install and open Heyimokay
Tap Install, wait a moment, then tap Open. If you’d like, you can now go back to the browser’s settings and switch Allow from this source off again; Heyimokay stays installed.
5. Set up check-ins
- Choose two check-in windows: one in the morning and one in the evening.
- Add up to six people to the circle, with their name, mobile number and email address.
- Allow notifications when asked, so the reminder before a window closes can appear.
That’s it. There’s no account to create. How Heyimokay works explains what happens each day.
Keep reminders working
Some phones close apps in the background to save battery, which can delay reminders. If reminders arrive late or not at all, open Settings › Apps › Heyimokay › Battery and choose Unrestricted or Don’t optimize. The names differ by brand. Also keep the phone charged, for example on a charger by the bed at night.
Is it safe to install an app from a website?
Installing an app from outside Google Play is safe when you trust the source. Download Heyimokay only from heyimokay.com, never from another site or from a file someone sends you. Android also checks every update: an update to Heyimokay installs only if it’s signed by the same developer as the version on the phone.
Heyimokay doesn’t use your location or read your messages, and it doesn’t show ads. The privacy policy explains exactly what it stores.
Updating Heyimokay
To update, download the latest version from heyimokay.com and install it the same way. It installs over the existing app, and the check-in windows and circle stay as they are.
If something goes wrong
“App not installed”
Usually the phone is low on storage, or the download didn’t finish. Free some space, delete the downloaded file, and download it again.
“There was a problem parsing the package”
The file is incomplete or damaged. Delete it and download it again from heyimokay.com on a stable connection.
I can’t find the downloaded file
Open the Files app (on some phones My Files) and look in Downloads.
